Determined to avoid becoming a normal, boring, co-habitating couple (which they deem “the sweater people”), Jimmy and Gretchen struggle to keep their debaucherous, partying lifestyle going 24/7 in the premiere. There’s also the traditional merging of belongings, which triggers anxiety in both halves of the emotionally stunted couple.

The stars say this season of “You’re the Worst” keeps the same dark comedic (and sometimes goofy) tone, though it ventures into heavier territory, like introducing Jimmy’s blue-collar English family.

“There will be some reveals about our characters’ back-story and what they’ve dealt with before they were in a relationship,” Cash says.

Season Two also brings bigger storylines for the comedy’s supporting cast: Gretchen’s party-girl best friend Lindsay (Kether Donohue) struggles with finding her identity after getting dumped by her husband. Jimmy’s war veteran roommate Edgar (Desmin Borges) continues to pine after Lindsay and makes a new friend (guest star Collette Wolfe).

But despite the show’s perceived pessimism about relationships (in episode two, both leads visibly recoil at the suggestion that love is putting someone else’s needs before your own), Cash rejects the idea that the show is anti-romance.

“The thing with Jimmy and Gretchen is they’re going into something that they believe will end badly, but it’s worth it to go through the journey together even if it doesn’t work out,” she says. “I think that’s actually the most romantic thing that they could do.”
